Kako je saoptila policija, helikopterom je upravljao Mekre, a nesreća se dogodila samo na kilometar razdaljine od dvorca Dervis Haus, koji je pripao porodici Mekre. U saoptenju policije navodi se i da je helikopter pao najvjerovatnije uslijed otećenja, koje je tokom samog leta izazvalo poar. Nakon pada, helikopter je u potpunosti izgorio, a očevici navode da je gust oblak crnog dima dugo kuljao sa mjesta nesreće. kotski automobilista na svjetskom reliju prvi put nastupio je 1987. godine, a 1991. i 1992. godine osvojio je Britanski ampionat u reliju.
